Victorian 18ct Gold Marquise Ring set with a Ruby & Diamonds

871W
Written by Olly Gerrish

This is a bright and very pretty 18ct gold ring that was assayed in 1893 in Birmingham. It is marquise shaped and has been set with approximately just over three quarters of a carat of evenly matched bright white old mine cut diamonds.  In the centre is a beautiful ruby that weighs just over half a carat. The rings shape meets in pointed ends, resembling the hull of a ship.  This cut is also known as the Navette cut (meaning “little boat” in French). This design became particularly popular in the late 1800s and variations have been designed ever since.

This style of ring is very flattering on the finger and can either be worn as a dress ring or an unusual engagement ring
