Book Your Virtual ConsultationAn unusual 18ct gold small pendant that was made circa 1860. It features two entwined snakes. One has been set with graduated cushion cut rubies, the other has been set with graduated cushion cut emeralds. Both of the snake’s heads and tails have been set with old mine cut diamonds and the snakes eyes have been set with small cabochon rubies. Many examples of Victorian jewellery feature two snakes intertwined, suggesting that these pieces were intended as tokens of love and affection. Snakes featured heavily in the myths of ancient Greece and Rome. They were reviled for their ability to shed their skin, meaning that they were seen as a symbol of regeneration and rebirth. This association with regeneration and fertility suggests links to the Victorian connotations between snakes and eternal love.
A wonderful pendant that sends a charming message to the receiver.
A rare snake pendant.
