Regency 18ct Gold Fede Ring set with a Garnet with a Hand on Either Side

447R
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual gold ring that was made circa 1820 and has been set with a pyrope . On either side is a hand that holds the claw set stone. This style of ring goes back to Roman times if not before. It is known as a “fede” ring which is a design of ring in which two hands meet and are clasped in friendship, love or betrothal. It became prominent in the medieval period from the 12th century onwards and in more modern times. The name is from the Italian phrase “mani in fede” or “hands clasped in faith”. This ring is slightly different but has an added sweet meaning as the garnet accentuates love and devotion.
