Regency 15ct Gold, Garnet, Green Beryl, Aquamarine and Paste Ring

199S
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

This 15ct gold ring is as interesting as it is pretty. Dating from the early 19th century, the ornate pierced scroll mount is set with a lush almandine garnet at the centre, green beryl accent stones, and flanked with a pale aquamarine and matching paste. All of the stones are original to the mount, suggesting that the paste was deliberately set, likely due to the ignorance of the setter. Paste was often used in antique jewellery, unwittingly or otherwise. As early as the mid 1600s, unscrupulous French dealers made a fair amount of money selling glass off as precious stones, particularly diamonds. Although, one hundred years later, paste became celebrated as a lower cost alternative, with the inventor of a superior type, Georges Frederic Stras, becoming the jeweller to the French king! Accompanied with such a rich history, this is a striking ring, subtle in colour but rich in detail.
