Grand Tour Georgian Carved Intaglio & Lapis Lazuli Ring

878G
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual Georgian ring with a carved carnelian intaglio of the man’s head in the centre and two oval cabochon lapis lazuli stones on either side. It was made circa 1800-1820 when a trip to Italy on what was known as “The Grand Tour” was a must for any young person’s education. The tourist shops in places like Naples, and Rome produced jewellery to commemorate their Roman and Etruscan past. This ring is a typical example of what would have been sold.
