Georgian Pinchbeck Chain

993C
Written by Olly Gerrish

A good Georgian Pinchbeck chain with the original barrel clasp.

It is not too long so it would look good over a jersey or jacket. It was made circa 1800 and to all intents and purposes looks like gold. Pinchbeck is a form of brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, mixed in proportions so that it closely resembles gold in appearance, the idea being that ordinary people in the Georgian period could buy gold ‘effect’ jewellery when gold was only sold in 18cts (which pushed the price way over what people could afford to pay).
