Book Your Virtual ConsultationOriginal Georgian Eye jewellery is rare and highly sought after. Unfortunately due to the popularity of eye jewellery it has been much imitated by fakers. Also larger original miniatures have been cut to take out just the eye and popped in to early brooches. This eye brooch is original and untouched. The painted depictions of eyes were discreet expressions of love in the Georgian period. Presumably, only the wearer and the portrait subject would know the identity of the beloved being depicted, keeping the experience intimate. This beautiful example has been painted with a side view of a female’s eye. The miniature is surrounded by an ourabos. This snake is devouring its own tail which represents the eternal cycle of death and rebirth. His head and body have been set with graduated old mine cut diamonds with a cabochon ruby eye.
A rare eye brooch.
