Georgian Gold & Turquoise Poissarde Earrings

12N
Written by Olly Gerrish

A good pair of 14ct gold earrings made circa 1820. The “poissarde” hoop earring originated in France.  The market women of Paris had a special relationship to the king since the Middle Ages when Saint Louis granted destitute women the exclusive privilege to sell retail goods and especially fish at designated sites in city markets. A market woman was known as a poissarde.  This name was applied to the earrings such as the ones we see here due to the fish hook detail to when opened.  They enter the ear through the back. There is added “Forget me not” detail after the flower of the same name. They look fantastic when worn and are not heavy.
