Georgian Dove of Peace Pendant set with Diamonds

669S
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

This is a wonderful piece of jewellery. It is predominantly silver and was made circa 1800-1820. It is known as a Saint Esprit or Dove of Peace. The “Saint Esprit” is historically a Christian symbol (meaning “Holy Spirit” in French) that is represented in the form of a dove. Worn by Protestants and Catholics alike, the Saint Esprit dove worn as a jewel can be traced back to pieces dating as early as the mid 1700s. It became very popular in France during the 18th century, and was often worn by peasant women in cross designs that incorporated either real gemstones or French paste. The dove itself is highly symbolic in many cultures and faiths, widely recognised as a representation of peace, love, and fidelity. In this piece the dove has been set with a cushion cut diamond in the centre of it’s body and graduated rose diamonds set in to it’s wings, tail and head. He has tiny cabochon ruby eyes and a gold beak. It is a rare and beautiful piece of jewellery.
