Georgian Amethyst Paste Riviere Necklace

72S
Written by Olly Gerrish

A beautiful riviere necklace that was made circa 1820. “Riviere” is a French word for a necklace of gems that increase in size towards a large central stone.  It has been set with graduated pastes in open pinched collect settings with a foiled amethyst clasp. At that time amethysts were only just being imported from Brazil and they were considered expensive and rare stones, so paste imitations were made. Surprisingly the paste survivals are rarer than the real macoy.  This riviere is in lovely condition.
