Georgian 9ct Gold & Coral Lyre Brooch with Lock & Key

69S
Written by Olly Gerrish

A rare brooch that was made circa 1800-1820. It is composed of a lyre with the strings attached set with graded coral split beads. In the centre is a small glazed heart. There is coiled gold thread detail behind the heart. Below is a beautifully made tiny key and padlock set with split coral beads. The harp is a “Heavenly” symbol. Coral was highly prized in the Georgian period and was believed to be endowed with mysterious sacred properties. It is a symbol of modesty, wisdom, happiness and immortality.
