Georgian 18ct Gold & White Enamel Memorial Ring

212M
Written by Olly Gerrish

A good 18ct gold Georgian memorial ring. It was for a member of the Bateman family who lived at Hartington Hall, Derbyshire. It had been the family seat since the 16th century. The most famous Bateman was Thomas Bateman, an archaeologist, who was a relation of Captain Hugh Bateman . He excavated 38 barrows in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, earning himself the nickname “The Barrow Knight”. This ring has the inscription “Capt Hugh Bateman . Ob (died) 19. Aug . 1758 aet (aged) 38” It is interesting to note that he was unmarried, hence the use of the white enamel.
