Georgian 18ct Gold Royal Blue Enamel & Diamond Dove of Peace Brooch & Pendant

294N
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

This is a wonderful piece of jewellery. It is gold and was made circa 18200-1820. It is known as a Saint Esprit or Dove of Peace. The “Saint Esprit” is historically a Christian symbol (meaning “Holy Spirit” in French) that is represented in the form of a dove. Worn by Protestants and Catholics alike, the Saint Esprit dove worn as a jewel can be traced back to pieces dating as early as the mid 1700s. It became very popular in France during the 18th century, and was often worn by peasant women in cross designs that incorporated either real gemstones or French . The dove itself is highly symbolic in many cultures and faiths, widely recognised as a representation of peace, love, or fidelity. In this piece the dove holds a heart in it’s beak that in turn holds a cross. All three pieces have been enamelled in Royal blue set with and diamonds. There is also a glazed locket behind the heart which contains hair. The dove has eyes and an orange enamelled beak. It is a really special piece of jewellery.
