Georgian 18ct Gold Garnet & Natural Split Pearls Ring

821P
Written by Olly Gerrish

A lovely late gold ring that was made circa 1820 but has been engraved at a later date on the reverse ‘Ann Mercer Obt (died) Augt 3rd 1867 Aet (aged) 71″. I researched where she was from and there was a reference to the family of Richard Mercer in Chipping, Lancashire. On the top is a ring of split pearls within gold petals that enclose a rectangular cut . The are the typical Georgian repoussee design of roses and have been set with further natural split pearls. Pearls were always used in jewellery as they represent tears. This ring is a good example of a mourning ring
