Georgian 15ct Gold Fede Ring set with Rose Diamonds & a Garnet

568U
Written by Olly Gerrish

A charming 15ct gold ring that was made circa 1820.  The clasped hands hinge open to reveal two tiny hearts on an inner ornate band.  Each cuff has been set with a rose diamond and there is a ring on the finger set with a small cabochon garnet. The outer bands have incised decoration.  The bands are joined together with a tiny pin that acts as a fulcrum or pivot enabling the bands to swivel, align and come together to form one ring to symbolise the union of two people. The fede ring has a long history dating back to antiquity. The major hallmark of this type of ring is the motif of two hands traditionally one female and the other male, clasped together. Known from the original Italian “mani in fede” (hands in faith or trust), this style of ring was popular during the Renaissance and given as a token of betrothal. This ring cannot be sized.
