French Art Nouveau Plique a Jour 18ct Gold Brooch/ Pendant set with Diamonds, Rubies & a Natural Pearl

385R
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

This is a stunning gold gold brooch that can also be worn as a pendant as it has two loops on the reverse. It is a wonderful flowing design with a spider’s web background in plique a jour . (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered to be very challenging technically. It has been set with a shaped above the enamel and graded rose diamonds around the edge and in the stylised buds. There is a drop with a small rose above. This brooch is so pretty and in very good condition and was made circa 1900-1910.
