French 19th Century 18ct Gold Harlequin Necklace set with Various Gem Stones

230T
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

A rare necklace that was made circa 1840 in France.   It has been set with a kaleidoscope of different gem stones with a long pear shaped aquamarine drop in the middle.  This style is known as a Harlequin pattern because the rainbow effect of many colours was associated with the traditional costume of the Harlequin in the Italian Commedia dell’Arte.  The claw set gem stones include amethysts, a carnelian, sapphires, aquamarines, topaz,  pink topaz, citrines, and chrysophase.  The stones are claw set with an attractive crown design.  In between is a  stylised anthemion design consisting of a number of radiating petals, developed by the ancient Greeks from the Egyptian and Asiatic form known as the honeysuckle or lotus palmette, and buds in 18ct gold.  The chain is a flat link and leads to a clasp that mirrors the gold motifs in the necklace.  A gorgeous necklace that looks amazing when worn.
