French 18ct Two Colour Gold Art Nouveau Plique-à-Jour & Diamond Fuchsia Brooch

870K/PR
Written by Olly Gerrish

A beautiful 18ct gold brooch that was made in France in the Art Nouveau period circa 1900-1910. It is designed as a fuchsia with three stamens set with diamonds. The two leaves on the left have plique-à-jour enamel in between. The term plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically. The technique is similar to that of cloisonné, but using a temporary backing that after firing is dissolved by acid or rubbed away. It is difficult to attribute it to a particular jeweller, but it was certainly made to a very high standard.
