Book Your Virtual ConsultationA beautiful pair of opal drop earrings that were made circa 1910. The large opals are really well matched and display vivid flashes of red and green with blue undertones. They have 9ct gold caps and a further round cabochon cut opal above. When Australian opals appeared on the world market in the 1890’s, the Hungarian mines spread the idea that it was not genuine, probably because gems with such brilliant fire had not been seen before. Australia eventually assumed the mantle of premier opal producer of the world, becoming famous for Lightning Ridge’s colourful and rare black and crystal stones. So they were an exciting new stone and became very fashionable in the Edwardian period.
These earrings are in amazing condition.
It is rare to find a matching pair of opals such as the ones in these earrings.
