Edwardian 18ct Gold, Three Stone Opal & Diamond Ring by Deakin & Francis

569S
Written by Olly Gerrish

A well made and smart 18ct gold opaL and diamond ring that was made in Birmingham in 1904 by the firm Deakin & Francis. The firm is well known for making fine quality jewellery and was founded in 1786 by Benjamin Woolfield. It is one of the oldest jewellery firms that is still producing jewellery in England today. This ring has been set with three well matched opals that display red, green and blue flashes of colour. In between are small diamonds that give the ring a sparkle. In the Edwardian period opals were in fashion as they were the new exciting stone on the block. The opals were imported from Australia where new mines, notably Lightning Ridge were extracting wonderful opals. Prior to the new discoveries opals had been sourced in Hungary and were nowhere near the quality of the Australian stones.
