Edwardian 18ct Gold Ring set with a Large Opal with Diamond Shoulders

336W
Written by Olly Gerrish

A good looking 18ct gold ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It has been claw set with a cabochon cut opal that has an estimated weight of 2.16 carats. At the turn of the 20th century opals were coming in to England from Australia. The first discovery of common opals in Australia was made near Angaston by the German geologist Johannes Menge in 1849. Both the Queensland Boulder Opal and Lightning Ridge fields attracted miners in the 1880’s. The opals found were exported in large quantities world wide and became really fashionable as the “must” stone to wear! On either side are three old mine cut diamonds that contrast well with the opal. It looks really pretty on the finger
