Edwardian 18ct Gold & Platinum Ring set with an Opal with Diamonds on Either Side

25X
Written by Olly Gerrish

A very pretty 18ct gold ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It has been claw set in platinum with a colourful opal which displays green, red and blue flashes.  The name Opal has long been thought to have derived from the Latin word “Opalus” meaning “precious stone”, and the Greek “Opallios” meaning “to see a change in colour”.  This word dates back to around 250 BC, at which point it was thought that opal was more valuable than any other gemstone in the world. I love these stones as they are all different in character depending on the seam they are quarried from. On either side of the opal are two diamonds within platinum rub over settings with millgrain detail.

It is a lovely design and looks beautiful when worn.
