Edwardian 18ct Gold, Five Stone Opal & Diamond Ring

502R
Written by Olly Gerrish

This is an unusual 18ct gold ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It has been set with five oval cabochon cut opals that are well matched and colourful stones. The exact origin of opal’s name is disputed, but historians are confident that in ancient Rome opal was known as “opalus” which translates as the “precious stone” It was revered as it was considered to display the colours of other gemstones all in one stone. In between are small old mine cut diamonds on either side of the opals. It sits low on the finger and curves nicely around it so it would be a wonderful engagement or dress ring
