Edwardian 18ct Gold Double Snake & Lover’s Knot Ring set with Sapphires & Diamonds

226X
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

This 18ct gold ring is very unusual as although the first impression is of a lover’s knot on closer inspection it is composed of two entwined snakes. Their heads have each been set with a sapphire and the body of one of the snakes has been set with further sapphires and rose diamonds. The knot motif was used a lot in the Victorian and Edwardian periods as it literally meant “To tie the knot” so it represents everlasting love. The snake motif in antique jewellery represented “Eternal love and wisdom”, so there are two strong messages of love in this beautiful ring.

It was made in 1902 in Birmingham and is as suitable as an engagement ring now as it was over 120 years ago.
