Edwardian 15ct Gold & Platinum, Green Garnet & Natural Pearl Round Brooch

575W
Written by Olly Gerrish

A festive brooch that is like a wreath or garland. It was made circa 1910 and is 15ct gold with platinum C shapes. It has been set with seven well matched green garnets interspersed with natural pearls. Green garnets or demantoid garnets as they are known, are wonderful stones that are a lovely apple green colour. Although garnets have been known since ancient times, the demantoid variety was not discovered until 1868 in Russia’s western central Ural Mountains. Miners were immediately stunned by the highly refractive nature of the gem material. They began comparing it to diamond and referred to it as “demantoid”, from the French “demant” meaning diamond. The reason is obvious, with its high brilliance and dispersion. These bright apple green stones are comparatively rare and very expensive.

It comes in the original brown Moroccan tooled leather case retailed byb Mallett based in the Octagon, Bath.
