Edwardian 15ct Gold Butterfly Brooch set with Rubies & Sapphires

971R
Written by Olly Gerrish

A very pretty gold brooch of a butterfly that was made circa 1880-1900. The wings have been set with alternate sapphires and rubies. The body and wings have been realistically engraved. The butterfly is a symbol of the soul, immortality, rebirth and resurrection, the ability to transform, a butterfly is born, transforming from a caterpillar. Also, the butterfly is a symbol of the Great Goddess. The image of the Great Goddess goes back to the ancient times of human history, to the Paleolithic. This supreme deity personified heaven and earth at the same time, life and death. So the wearing of this brooch carries wonderful meanings as well as being a very decorative piece of jewellery.
