Early 20th Century 18ct Gold Navratna Ring

352X
Written by Olly Gerrish

Navratna is a Sanskrit word meaning “nine gems” or “ratnas”. Jewellery created in this style has important cultural significance in many southern, and south-eastern Asian cultures as a symbol of wealth, and status, and is claimed to yield talismanic benefits towards health and well being. The setting of the stones is believed to hold mystical powers tied to the astrology and mythology of Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. The historic origin of the navratna is tied to the astrological concept of “Navagrahas”, or “nine celestial gods” (planets).

The stones represent as follows.

Ruby/ the Sun.

Diamond / Venus.

Coral / Mars.

Emerald / Mercury.

Cat’s eye / Ketu.

Topaz or yellow sapphire / Jupiter.

Garnet / Rahu.

Pearl / Moon.

Blue sapphire  / Saturn.

This 18ct gold ring is a lovely example and has an emerald in the centre with a rose diamond, ruby, sapphire, topaz, cat’s eye  chrysoberyl, garnet, and a pale coral around it. The absence of a pearl may be the reason why it has been set with a  pale yellow sapphire.
