Carved Coral Late Georgian Cameo Brooch of Classical Lady’s Head

568F
Written by Olly Gerrish

A finely carved brooch of a Classical maiden, most likely produced in Naples circa 1830. It was then purchased by English goldsmiths who would have mounted the in gold. Such pieces were very popular as it was the age of the Grand Tour. There was huge interest in Classical antiquity so pieces were reproduced and sold to hungry enthusiasts. They were often of very high quality such as this example. It also has a hook at the top on the back so it could be worn as a pendant.
