Art Nouveau Plique-à-Jour 18ct Gold, Diamond & Natural Pearl Pendant

814G
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual and really pretty Art Nouveau pendant that was most likely made in Belgium circa 1900-1910. It has been very finely made and is in the form of a stylised grapevine with three vine leaves and four natural pearl drops. The top branch has been set with small diamonds. The leaves have been enamelled with Plique-à-jour enamel. Plique-à-jour (a French term for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically.
