Art Nouveau 18ct Gold & Rose Diamond pendant of a Lady with Locket on Reverse

905S
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual 18ct gold Art Nouveau pendant, finely made and set with graduated rose diamonds in ornate volutes around the edge. In the centre is a young girl with a rose diamond bandeau. On the reverse is a hinged locket. The roots of the medal jewel are found in the archaeological revival period and, as design moved towards the “fin d’siècle”, the Art Nouveau style came to influence the design. Feminine figures, flowing hair, flowers and classic subjects such as the “Three Graces” and “Four Seasons” appeared as the more coin-like medals waned. Medals, appearing around 1899, with their diamond accents, proved to be a turning point for the popularity of the medal jewel. Today these pieces are very sought after.
