Art Nouveau 18ct Gold & Platinum, Plique-à-jour & Diamond Ring

103U
Rare Find
Written by Olly Gerrish

An unusual gold ring that was made circa 1900-1910. It is typical of the period with the botanical subject of a flower sprig set with diamonds with small diamonds in the leaves. The background has been enamelled in the technique in an eau de nil colour. Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enamelling technique where the is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained glass and is considered very challenging technically.
